DEVIL'S BLESSING && TALIA SMITH
INFERNO && TEMP. SAMMIE PICKETT
SILENT HEART && JOHNNY GARNER
Cian had been coming along really well this season and he was doing a lot better than he had been in his short two year old season. Heather was going along fairly steadily herself, breaking her maiden on her third time out, and in a HOTY race to boot! Inferno has been coming along well too, his results may not be the best but he was sure gaining lots of muscle and poise on the track.
Heather stepped on to the dirt with steadiness and power. She pricked her ears tall, and pawed effortlessly at the floor. The three horses went through their warm up lap side by side by side, Inferno sticking out like a sore thumb in between the two bay horses. Every now and again one of them would make a bid to try and pull ahead of the others only to be pulled back into line by their rider. The trio headed towards the practice gates where they were promptly loaded by the workers there. There were a few moments of almost silence other than the faint sounds of the horses moving around in the gates. Heather and Fern stood the quietest, whereas Cian was clashing around in the gates, causing them to rattle around.
Soon enough they flew open, and the three horses burst from the gate, breaking cleanly and settling in like they had during their warm up, neck by neck, as they started to make their way to the finish line. Heather shot to the front instantly; her large-boned body makes her look like she is indeed a colt. Cian was breathing right up her neck, settling beside her as they ran nose for nose. Fern wrapped up the pack, cruising along effortlessly as he made no attempt to move up; letting the front two tire out. They continued on the same way, Heather and Cian occasionally swapping who had their nose in front of the other every now and again, but the real action didn’t start until they hit the backstretch.
Heather really stretched her legs out when she ran as she continued to gallop. Fern pricked his ears and stayed toward the rail, waiting until Cian and Heather tired out. Cian pulled ahead by a head when they hit it, striving to keep up the burst of speed he put on, but unfortunately he’d hit the accelerator too early, tiring out in the last few metres to give Heather and Fern an easy shot at the lead, the younger mare taking the opportunity to breeze easily past the colt and over the line before he did. Fern had enough speed to finish a neck ahead of Cian but not enough to finish a length behind Heather. Although the filly only had 3 races under her belt, she was a fiery competitor against the boys.
